Frequently Asked Questions
The term “podcast” is a portmanteau of “iPod”, the famous Apple’s portable music player, and broadcast. In this word, a pod refers to any kind of container, and cast to the idea of broadcasting.
Concretely, a podcast is a digital media file (audio and video), or a series of such files, that is distributed over the Internet for playback on portable media players and personal computers. Though most of the radios make podcast from their broadcasts (for instance, the BBC), many people, called “podcasters”, create their own podcasts to diffuse them on the Internet.
The specificity of a podcast is the syndication : the collection of files resides at a unique web address (the feed address). People can subscribe to this feed and, with an appropriate software (a “feed aggregator”), download the new available “episodes” automatically and send them to their favorite portable music player.
